McCutcheon Rapid Response Events in Texas
April 2, 2014

"If you give 'em hope, you give 'em a chance, a way to think about how this change is possible" said Harvey Milk.
"That sense of hope, we're going to hold, and we're going to fight for, however impossible this battle looks" added Laurence Lessig.

They did it.

We aren't really surprised, because the Supreme Court seems determined to facilitate the undoing of our democracy. We are outraged nonetheless.

The relatively few who can afford to max out the legal limit on direct contributions to candidates and parties will now be able to dole out as much as $5.9 million (maybe even more) to get their political pawns elected. That’s nearly 50 times what the limit had been — $123,000 — before April 2 2014.

How can the five justices behind this ruling contend with a straight face that letting the super-rich pour millions into elections won’t result in corruption?

McCutcheon, and Citizens United before it, are not what the founders of our great nation had in mind. Rather, this is exactly what they worked and literally fought to avoid.
