Delivering Letters to Senator Ellis and Representative Thompson

During the 83rd legislative session Senator Rodney Ellis and Representative Senfronia Thompson submitted SCR 2 and HCR 21, resolutions calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to establish that money is not speech and corporations do not have the Constitutional rights of human beings.

It was important that Texas legislators were made aware of the discontent surrounding the Supreme Court’s decisions in Speech Now, Citizens United and McCutcheon.  Unfortunately, SCR 2 and HCR 21 did not make it out of committee.

Money in politics is the reason our government is unable to satisfactorily resolve many of today’s problems, whether it’s voter rights, campaign contribution disclosure, women’s health, or the environment. Until we get an amendment, we will continue fighting against monied interests on all fronts. Dividing our time, energy and resources to address each issue independently is exhausting. We would like to see the many organizations working on different issues come together concentrating our efforts to take back control of our government. Then we can solve our problems.

For this movement to continue pushing forward, in our state and nationally, we need resolutions similar to SCR 2 and HCR 21 filed in the Texas 84th Legislative Session. Texans United to Amend decided to ask both Legislators to resubmit their previous legislation.

We discovered that Senator Ellis has already re-submitted SCR 2, so we delivered a letter to thank him and express our intent to support his resolution. Our letter to Rep. Thompson urges her to resubmit HCR 21 so we have concurrent resolutions in both houses.

Here are the letters with eleven co-signing organizations

UPDATE: Jan 26, 2015

Thanks to Brete Anderson at Rep. Thompson's office for notifying us that a new concurrent resolution HAS been filed. The new bill number is  HCR 49 (link to text). We recommend going to Texas Legislature Online, set up your "MY TLO", and add SCR 2 and HCR 49 to your watch list. You will  be notified when anything happens.
