March 20 Lobby Day Was A Huge Success!

What a great Lobby Day we had Monday in Austin and around Texas! Over fourty Texans United to Amend citizen-lobbyists gathered at the Texas Capitol from around the state, coming from Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, Irving, Arlington, Garland, Caldwell, San Antonio, and McLennan and Bosque counties.

We lobbied in support of SCR 2 and HCR 21 (which request that Congress write an amendment to the United States Constitution to address the corrupting influence of money in politics), and HJR 94, which calls for an Article V convention to propose the amendment.

We spoke with over sixty Senators, Representatives or their aides delivering petitions and gathering support for these resolutions. The remaining petitions are being delivered at a later date but all 181 Texas legislators will be handed paper copies of constituent signers' names and comments. We also will send a complete copy of all 8400+ Texas signers to the Senate State Affairs Committee (for SCR2) and the Federalism and Fiscal Responsibility, Select Committee (for HCR21 and HJR94) in the House.

We learned several things in delivering the petitions:

  • Legislators were frequently already aware of the "We, the People"- SCR2 petition from receiving email notifications whenever a new constituent signed on.
  • No matter how many names were on any particular Senate or House district list, the recipient was very interested in learning that the named supporters were their constituents. In other words, your petition comments spoke directly to your legislator!
  • Some legislators/aides asked for email addresses of their constituent signers. They want to communicate further with you. (Note that email addresses are never given out for any reason.)

Don't Underestimate Your POWER - You ARE Making an Impact on Texas Legislators!

Keep The Momentum going:

  • Follow-up contact makes a difference. Find your State Senator and Representative at www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/, then phone, fax, or email them and let them know that you are an SCR2 petition signer and support a constitutional amendment limiting corporate and big-money interests interfering with our democratic elections and governance.
  • While the TUTA and Wolf Pac petitions aimed at impacting Texas 83 Legislative Session, new petitions are coming which will be delivered during the 84th Session. Watch for new petitions on our Petitions page.
  • Re-post the new petition links on your Facebook page and websites and re-send them to your friends and Tweet about them.

Yes, we have had some effect but we aren't there yet.

Please don't let up. Please take at least one action above to help our country rid itself of corporate control. We, the People, established the United States of America in 1776.  We, the People, now need to re-affirm its founding democratic principles.
