Developing support in your community

Developing support in your community can take many forms.  Essentially anything that causes people to recognize, think, and talk about the problems of money in politics and corporate influences in government will advance the cause. However, having a written plan of action or specific goals will greatly increase your power to influence the trend setters and decision makers in your area. A plan might be as simple as knocking on 5 doors today with the Texans United to Amend petition and asking residents if they would like to show their support by signing. Hand out flyers with information if they don't know enough to commit to signing a petition.

Door-knocking in pairs or by yourself is, in fact, an excellent way to grow a strong movement. It provides an opportunity to inform your neighbors. Every once in a while you will meet someone who is very enthusiastic about the cause and will want to participate. This will multiply your effectiveness.

Writing a Letter to the Editor   (download doc)
The letters to the editor are among the most read parts of the paper. When you write a letter about the corrupting influence of money in elections and how it effects your community you are spreading the word effectively. Reach out to the surrounding area and multiple papers with the same letter.

Gathering Petition Signatures
Texans United to Amend petition is available for activists to print out and use. Signatures can be gathered door to door, at rallies, meetings or at public events. Signed petitions should be forwarded to info@texansunitedtoamend.org

In addition to sheer numbers of supporters it is also important to gather signatures from ethnically and culturally diverse groups. Identifying and including traditionally under-served populations in your community will not only strengthen your base but will encourage and empower others to take a larger role in their own self realization. If you can recruit one person from a previously isolated group of people you may be changing the minds of many others.

Invite Local Businesses to sign a petition.
Small Business is the backbone of the economy. Local government has a high priority to support them so their input is invaluable. Print out a few Small business petitions and hand out where you do business. The businesses most friendly to this movement are the ones who have large corporation competitors who have disadvantaged the small businesses.
