August 15, 2013 - Congressional Amendments
Hello again, TUTA Members,
Just chatted with Liz Wally and Tom McGath at Public Citizen about the push to get 160 members of Congress co-sponsoring an amendment to build on the progress made in 16 states that have called for an amendment.
Here is a link to all the amendments introduced in this session. http://www.united4thepeople.org/amendments.html
There are only a few amendments in each house that have backing from advocacy groups such as Public Citizen and others. Public Citizen is asking us to focus on the following three amendments in the US House of Representatives:
US House: Deutch H.J.RES.34 McGovern H.J.RES.21 Nolan H.J.RES.29
Move To Amend is backing ONLY Representative Nolan's Resolution H.J.RES.29. For their comparison of the resolutions check the Move to Amend website: https://movetoamend.org/other-amendments.
We are asking TUTA members to set up meetings with their US Representatives to ask them to co-sponsor these amendments. Public Citizen has offered to send an email to their database inviting their supporters to join you. So let me know if you are able to set up a meeting. If your US Rep does not have offices in your area you can also make phone calls asking them to support an amendment. Please let me know who you call and what they say so I can relay the information.
While I was trying to track down the US Rep districts I found this website to help track specific legislators. http://www.govtrack.us/ Sign up to track YOUR Legislator.
The following Texas Democrats are considered likely to support. If you are in these districts is would be especially helpful if you contact them and report back to me. (Sorry I don't know what districts ya'll are in. Maybe you could let me know that so I can keep track.)
Al Green TX 09 South west Houston area, Alief, Missouri City
Rubén Hinojosa TX 15 South Texas MCAllen
Beto O'Rourke TX 16 El Paso (Aurolyn, is this your Rep?)
Joaquín Castro TX 20 San Antonio west side
Pete Gallego TX 23 Uvalde, Del Rio, Ft Stockton
Filemon Vela, Jr. TX 34 South and East Texas Harlingen, Matamoros, Kingsville

Marc Veasey TX 33 East Fort Worth, Arlingdon and West Dallas
Lloyd Doggett TX 35 Del Valle, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Buda, Kyle, Lockhart, and East Austin?
If these are your Representatives below, make sure to say "Thank you" for supporting these amendments.
Already co-sponsoring one or more amendment:
Sheila Jackson Lee TX 18
